Remember When . . . The London Shadows Series

Remember When . . . The London Shadows Series

Many of you probably saw this on Facebook on Monday, but in case you missed it . . . I’m super-excited to share that my next series (beginning July 2017) has its official titles!

The series itself will be called London Shadows.

I love this. My editor recommended something that has “London” in it as immediate branding of the setting, and after toying with a few ideas for a few days, this is what I came up with, and I’m so glad they liked it. The “London” comes because, though the majority of the books aren’t actually set in London, my main characters are all from there, and it greatly affects who they are. Because they’re not upper-crust London-dwellers. They’re former urchins . . . they’re the underbelly of London . . . they are the shadows. Not to mention that the name hints at the mystery and suspense that will be threaded through the series, and, if you’re getting very deep into it, the shadow of war over all of Great Britain in 1914.

So that’s the series . . . but what about each book?

My original plan was for The Name Thief, The Music Thief, and The Time Thief. I liked these quite a bit, but the team at Bethany House wanted the titles to immediately evoke the era, and while these sound cool, they certainly don’t scream “historical romance!” A very valid point. So I sent in a list of alternative titles for each book, and I’m thrilled with the ones they decided on:

These sound much more historical-romancey . . . plus they have the same rhythm as The Lost Heiress, The Reluctant Duchess, and A Lady Unrivaled, which should give readers a sense of continuity as we switch to the new series. Which means I’m one very happy girl. =D

A Name Unknown will release next July (2017), following thief Rosemary Gresham as she leaves London for a job unlike any she’s done before–she has to steal a man’s good name. She heads to Cornwall (where I will be heading in September, SQUEEE!) to the home of Peter Holstein, suspected German spy. But what she finds is a man who stutters so badly he can barely speak, not one filling important ears with German sentiments. She finds a man with secrets, but with a faith unlike anything she’s ever seen. What she finds is a good man . . . and so how can she steal his good name? Peter, meanwhile, is debating changing his name to the nom de plume he uses for his popular adventure novels that he writes in secret. But would even that convince his neighbors to trust him and remind them that he is English at heart? As he digs into his family history with Rosemary’s help, he seeks to discover why his family first left Germany to begin with . . . and whether it will ever again be enough to be simply Peter Holstein.

I’m just now doing my research for book 2, A Song Unheard. This one will focus on Rosemary’s “sister” Willa Forsythe, who is sent to Wales in autumn of 1914 to infiltrate the Belgian Symphony Orchestra, who was brought to Wales by two wealthy sisters to save them from the German occupation of Belgium and bring arts to their principality. Willa, a violin prodigy who has never had a day of training in her life, is eager to rub elbows with these world-class musicians . . . even if her true purpose there is to steal from one of them, so that he’s forced to accept the help of her boss in getting his super-intelligent little sister out of Brussels . . . and into British Intelligence. Among lessons in music, hints of the Belgian Resistance, and a foray into Belgium to steal his sister for him, Willa and violinist Lukas will learn more about themselves than they ever thought they could . . . and unleash music inside Willa capable of soothing more souls than just her own.

The final book is just barely an idea, LOL. An Hour Unspent will feature the older brother of my clan of thieves, Barclay Pearce. He will be issued a challenge to steal an hour from Big Ben’s clock tower, and his research in how to do so will take him to the door of the clock-maker who helps care for the iconic clock–and, inadvertently, to the aid of this clock-maker’s daughter, Evelina, a suffragette who is frustrated at how the war is stifling her cause. This one will delve into how clock-makers found new uses for their talents in this time of war, helping to create weapons rather than timepieces, and also on how these fierce suffragettes turned their attention to the war effort as well . . . and accomplished more for their cause in so doing than any of their marches or rallies had ever achieved.

I’m so excited for this series!!! And will soon be launching a contest related to A Song Unheard, so stay tuned for that (tuned . . . ha. Punny.).

New Book Series!

New Book Series!

I’ve been waiting and waiting to share the good news. And now, the ink is on the dotted line, and I can finally tell you all about the Society Thieves Series that I just sold to Bethany House! This series will launch in spring of 2017 with The Name Thief.

1914 – Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of
former orphan-urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of
London. Grown now, they are no longer pickpockets—now they concentrate on stealing
high value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. But
when Rosemary is given an assignment by a mysterious Mr. V to determine whether
a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany, she is in for
the challenge of a lifetime. How does one steal a family’s history, their very
name?
Peter Holstein is awkward at best in society. Stuttering and
stammering as he does, no one ever would have expected him to gain the ear of
the king…and given his family’s German blood, he knows there are plenty who are
unhappy that he has, which is why his popular series of adventure novels are
written under a pen name. With European politics boiling, Peter settles into his
country estate debating whether the time has come to distance himself from his
German roots and perhaps even change his name as the King is considering doing—and
when a historian shows up at his door offering to help him trace his family
history, he views the bookish Miss Gresham as a gift from God. Perhaps she can
help him find proof that the Holsteins have always been friends of England and
the Saxe-Coburg family that rules there. And perhaps they can manage it before
suspicion in the small village he calls home reaches a fever pitch and sees his
family home ruined.

The more Rosemary learns about the Holsteins, the more
she thinks Mr. V sorely mistaken in his suspicions…and the more she comes to
hate herself. These are a noble family and this a noble man—and though she
always thought she’d do anything for pounds sterling, she finds herself
fighting against the rabble trying to ruin him when war is declared rather than
lending them a hand. Especially when she discovers that he is the writer behind
the books that have inspired all of England. She doesn’t have it in her to
steal his good name…but what are the chances that she’ll manage to steal his
heart before he discovers who and what she really is?

I am so incredibly super-duper excited about this series! The next books in the series will follow other members of Rosemary‘s “family.” In each story, the thief will find redemption as Mr. V sends them out on missions to claim things that hands cannot really hold or steal–a good name, music, beauty, time. All will draw on how arts were used as propaganda during WWI, and pull on some of the most interesting advances and peculiarities of the war. Each will also stand completely on its own, with no reference to the previous books.

And for fun, each one will also have a ridiculous challenge issues by the other members of the family. In The Name Thief, Rosemary‘s older brother challenges her to steal a manor house. So naturally, she tries to figure out how to steal Peter’s home, along with his name. Subsequent books will up the ante each time, and give the thief/hero something to pursue along with the job Mr. V assigns.

If anyone is interested in knowing what Peter and Rosemary and his manor house, Kensey Manor, looks like, I just made my Pinterest board public! You can check it out here.

As usual, I’m collecting names of people to receive a copy of The Reluctant Duchess from Bethany House in exchange for helping promote the book (book description is at the bottom of the post).  You can help promote by:

* Posting reviews to Amazon, B&N,
Christian Book, etc.;
* sharing about/reviewing the book on your blog;
* asking your Library to order it; snapping a photo of it on the shelf of a
store and posting;
* sharing on Facebook, Twitter, etc., both about the book once you’ve read it and posting pictures when you get it;
* recommending to a
book club;
* other ideas uniquely your own

Influencers for the first book in the series had first shot at signing up for the second, so my spots are limited and few. The form will only be live until Saturday morning, which is why I gave you notice in my blog on Wednesday of when it would be going live. =)The form is at the bottom of this post, and you can also access it here.

(Due to shipping costs, Bethany House has a US-address-only policy. If you’re an international reader interested in influencing, there are digital versions available; just email me at roseannamwhite at gmail dot com.)

Right now I have about 20 slots open. Those remaining slots will be selected based on your answers to that question of “What will you do to help promote?” so please be sure to tell me about any blogs or places where you habitually post reviews and any super-cool influence you have. 😉

It’s been such a blessing to have a team of happy readers to share in the joys of a book releasing! I’ve so enjoyed getting to know the members of my team with The Lost Heiress and look forward to getting to know some new names and faces too!

Now, what in the world is The Reluctant Duchess about? Well this is the publisher’s description from Amazon:

A Riveting Edwardian Series Set among Britain’s High Society

 Lady
Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she has
never felt good enough–not for her father, not for the man she thought
she’d marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she’s willing to
be forever an outcast if it means escaping Loch Morar.

Brice
Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has found himself in possession of a
rare treasure his enemies are prepared to kill for. While Brice has
never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, the last thing he
needs is the distraction of Lady Rowena, who finds herself in a
desperate situation. But when Rowena’s father tries to trap Brice into
marrying his daughter, Brice makes a surprising decision.

Rowena
wanted to escape the Highlands, but she’s reluctant to marry a notorious
flirt. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in questionable
business with a stolen treasure, she fears she’s about to end up
directly in the path of everything she was trying to avoid.

“With the momentum and drama of a modern
thriller and the charm and intrigue of an Edwardian upper-class romance, White
balances hearty helpings of names, ranks, and family history with highly
entertaining situations and plenty of humor.” ~ Booklist

Influencer Sign-Up and News Coming

I’m so excited! We’re at the 2-months-to-go mark for the release of The Reluctant Duchess. In my world, that means chatting with Bethany House about fun things like bookmarks, personalized tea bags, Facebook covers, and when I can share the cover for the third book in the series.

I’m beginning the process of gathering influencers, so if you’re interested in being on my launch team this time around, be sure to check my blog Friday morning (10 a.m. EST) for a link to the sign-up form! (Last time some folks missed out because the list was filled before they even saw my blog, so this time I’m giving you warning, LOL!) An influencer will get a complimentary copy of the book from Bethany House with the understanding that they’ll help spread the word about the book through reviews, tweets, posts on Facebook, talking to family and friends, requesting libraries carry it, etc.

When The Reluctant Duchess releases, I’ll be having another big giveaway. This one’s piece de resistance will be another necklace. Not crafted by me this time. No, this one is from the lovely folks at Tiara Town.

This red crystal necklace is a fair imitation of the famous Nottingham rubies that play a vital role in the story of Brice, whom readers met in The Lost Heiress, and Rowena, the heroine from the Scottish Highlands. Who grew up in a castle modeled on Eilean Donan.

(No, I’m not sending anyone there as part of the giveaway. If only I were…I’d send myself along with them!)

But that’s not the only fun in the works! Next week I’ll be doing TWO fun reveals. First, the cover for book 3, A Lady Unrivaled. Cover reveal will be on February 9. Then, on February 10, I finally get to share some exciting news about my next series!

So, to sum up:

1. Come back here Friday at 10 a.m. EST to sign up for a few select influencer spots for The Reluctant Duchess, if you’re interested

2. Tuesday, February 9 is the cover reveal of A Lady Unrivaled

3. Wednesday, February 10 you’ll hear about the series I’m working on now

Have a fabulous Wednesday!

Sale!

Sale!

First of all, thanks to all my fabulous readers for sharing about the 1-day-only sale of The Lost Heiress on the 2nd. In unprecedented awesomeness, it skyrocketed to the top of its lists and even cracked the top 100 on all Kindle books! If you heard any strange shouting for joy, that was just me. 😉

And now that the 1-day-only sale is over, I want to share about another sale, this one for my Culper Ring Series (digital editions). These prices will run until January 31st–your chance to snatch up the whole series for under $5!

Otherwise, it’s back to the grind today. School will begin at our kitchen table promptly at 9…and I’m going to use the time until then to work on Giver of Wonders, which is thiiiiiiiiis to “The End”!

See y’all back here soon for some more special stuff I’ll be focusing on this week!

Announcing the Ladies of the Manor Series

Announcing the Ladies of the Manor Series

Wow, it feels like forever since I did a Remember When Wednesday post! Of course, last week we were celebrating the release of Circle of Spies. Which reminds me that we have some winners–but you’ll have to scroll down to find them. 😉
First, I can finally share the news I’ve been sitting on for a month and a half! Yay! We all know that my next book out is my biblical from WhiteFire, A Soft Breath of Wind, coming November of 2014. Well now I can finally talk about the next historical romance, coming summer 2015. Drum roll please…
This is nothing resembling official artwork. This is Roseanna wanting a graphic for her blog, LOL.

Coming from Bethany House, The Lost Heiress is, to put it mildly, very special to me. I know, I know, I say that a lot. But seriously, LOL. Here’s why.
When I was 12, I decided to write a novel. I solemnly swore to the New Years Resolutions in my journal that I would finish it, too–and I did, at age 13. It was called Golden Sunset, Silver Tear, and it was a historical romance about a girl raised as a princess but who discovers she’s actually a British nobelwoman…with the help of her best friend, heir to a dukedom. And once back in England, she finds herself unwittingly involved in the ongoing mystery of her parents’ deaths…and hidden jewels.
Brook and Justin underwent a lot of revision over the years…and a few different titles. I decided to totally rewrite it before my first writers conference, at which point I named it Fire Eyes and pitched it in 2007. It landed me an agent and got me a bit of interest from Bethany House (whose editor I pitched to), but alas…the time wasn’t right. And I’m pretty glad. 😉
A young Diane Kruger
is how I picture Brook Eden-
though with curly hair
A while back, my current agent asked if I had anything that would work as an Edwardian, and Brook sprang to mind. She is so the kind of young woman who came into her own in the 1910s!! It was one of those “Why didn’t I set it here to begin with? This so works!” things. =) So I started yet another rewrite, gave it yet another title, and turned it in to Karen. Well, when the Culper Ring Series drew to a close and it was time to pitch again, this is what she sent out–and you can imagine my glee when Bethany House expressed interest! Not only are they the first ones I pitched to in 2007, they’re also the first house I sent out a query to at age 14. Third time, apparently, is a charm. 😉
I describe this one as Downton Abbey meets Anastasia. We’ve got priceless red diamonds, Grimaldi princesses, dukes, danger, romance, and a girl finding her father after 18 years apart. We’ve got mystery and adventure, kidnapping and love, half-wild stallions and brand-new automobiles.
William Mosley, of Narnia fame,
is the closest I’ve seen to Justin Wildon,
heir to the fictional Duke of Stafford
This is the book I was working on over the weekend at my retreat (I wrote 40,000 words between Thursday and Monday!!!!!), which means it’s now well on its way to completion, and I’m so in love, yet again, with Brook and Justin. (Their names are the only ones that haven’t changed from the original, LOL.)
I’ll be talking about this one more as I write it, I’m sure, and as its time grows nearer. But I had to share the excitement of my FIRST FINISHED NOVEL being published! Nineteen years after I penned “Chapter One” (literally penned, in a notebook, in Health class my 7th grade year). Four title changes later. Draft number 1,239,875, I think. With 9 other books out in the meantime. But it’s finally happening.
So, yep, I’m very excited. It’s been an amazing week–Circle of Spies releasing, a writing retreat with my best friend, and now getting to share this. So to celebrate, I guess I’ll actually pick winners for that pearl necklace and set of the Culper Ring Series!
First, the Culper Pearls!
The winner is…
Rebecca Tracy-Williams!
Next we have the complete Culper Ring Series
Which goes to…
Sarah Holman!
Congrats, you two! You’ve likely already gotten emails from me requesting your info. 😉
